SMR projects

Even though, currently, dozens of SMR projects are being developed, employing a broad range of reactor technologies, it was recommended in the drawing up of a pFS that only technologies in advanced stages of development and design licensing in their country of origin, that come as close as possible to the requirement of using tested technologies, be implemented in the Czech Republic, with a view to the time constraints and the legislative and technical demands.

SMART100 is an integrated pressurised-water reactor with a gross power capacity of 121 MWe (365 MWt) and a design lifetime of 60 years. Standard square-configuration fuel shortened to 2 m and enriched up to 5% is used. Campaign duration is between 30 and 36 months. The safety systems are exclusively passive, and, in terms of layout, it is a two-unit project.

NuScale is an integrated pressurised-water reactor with a capacity of 50 MWe (160 MWt) and a design lifetime of 60 years. New capacity variants - 60 MWe and 77 Mwe – are being developed and evaluated. NuScale uses shortened standard square-configuration fuel enriched up to 5%. Campaign duration is 24 months. The safety systems are exclusively passive, and, in terms of layout, it is a plant with up to twelve modules.

UK SMR is a pressurised-water reactor with a net power capacity of 470 MWe (1276 MWt) with forced coolant circulation. The design lifetime is 60 years. UK SMR uses shortened standard square-configuration PWR fuel enriched up to 5%. Campaign duration is between 18 and 24 months. The safety systems are both active and passive, and, in terms of layout, it is a single-unit project.

SMR-160 is a pressurised-water reactor with a net power capacity of 160 MWe (525 MWt) with natural coolant circulation. The design lifetime is 80 years. SMR-160 uses standard square-configuration PWR fuel enriched up to 5%. Campaign duration is between 18 and 24 months. The safety systems are exclusively passive, and, in terms of layout, it is a single-unit project.

BWRX-300 is a boiling-water reactor with a net power capacity of 270-290 MWe (870 MWt), with direct coolant circulation. The design lifetime is 60 years. BWRX-300 uses tested 10x10 square configuration fuel enriched up to 5%. Campaign duration is between 12 and 24 months. The safety systems are exclusively passive, and, in terms of layout, it is a single-unit project.

NUWARD is an integrated pressurised-water reactor with a net power capacity of 170 MWe (540 MWt) with forced coolant circulation. The design lifetime is 60 years. Shortened standard square-configuration PWR fuel enriched up to 5%. Campaign duration is 24 months. The safety systems are exclusively passive, and, in terms of layout, it is plant with two reactors.
